A Most Violent Year – 2014

“In New York City 1981, an ambitious immigrant fights to protect his business and family during the most dangerous year in the city’s history.”

Another film I watched purely because Oscar Isaac was in it. Unfortunately it’s not the most entertaining film I’ve ever seen. It’s not a bad film by any means, the acting and story is exceptional it’s just that nothing really happens. I can see people who get moved easily by films really enjoying this because it is quite an emotional film but I was just hoping for a bit more action. I feel like someone with more knowledge of New York in that era would have enjoyed it if it was historically accurate but I have no idea about that so it was just like any other drama film to me.

Oscar Isaac has lost no respect though because he was as sensational as always and I look forward to seeing him in more films in the future (except Star Wars). The only problem I had with him, and this isn’t really his fault it’s whoever does the wardrobe, but his coat was so bad it was very distracting. The rest of the cast were good but forgettable. I didn’t recognise anybody and I probably won’t recognise them from this film if I were to see them in something else.

It is worth a watch though. I wouldn’t watch it twice because it’s just one of those films but I’m glad that I did watch it and for that type of film I think 7.1 is about right on IMDb.
