Rise/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – 2011/2014

First time I watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes I didn’t mind it. James Franco was pretty good and as much as the whole concept of the film is dreadful it wasn’t all that bad. I re-watched it a couple of days ago and then followed it with the sequel and I don’t know what I was thinking. Everything about them is just appalling. James Franco and John Lithgow just about made it tolerable first time around but second time nothing can help this film. Other than the obvious stupidity of the whole film there’s nothing specifically bad about it but there’s just nothing good about it. There’s nothing enjoyable at all about it. Unfortunately it’s actually the better of the two films.

The sequel felt so low budget. The first one I feel like they overspent on the acting budget and the graphics were poor and this one I feel like they did the opposite but they just took it too far. I mean why were they riding horses and stealing guns it was just ridiculous. Then they had no actors who could actually act. I mean they’re talking to computer generated apes a lot of the time so I can’t imagine it’s easy but there was no conviction in any of the acting it was really poor. Not at all helped by the story and the script that was clearly written by a young teenager.

There is a third one scheduled for 2017 that I will watch when it comes around but more out of curiosity than anything else I don’t see how anyone could be excited about it. Also how on earth they have gotten 7.6 and 7.7 on IMDb is beyond me, first one at best is a 6 and the second one is a 5 if I’m being kind.
