“A high school senior instigates a social pecking order revolution after finding out that she has been labeled the DUFF – Designated Ugly Fat Friend – by her prettier, more popular counterparts.”
Could have been a really good teenage comedy film but it’s about 10 or 15 years too late. If people want to see something like this they re-watch 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless or even John Tucker Must Die because it’s the same story and the same sort of comedy. Unpopular clever girl seeks help from popular, attractive football player and they end up falling for each other. It’s just so dated and repetitive it’s borderline embarrassing. Having said all of that if it was 10 years ago it would have been an okay film.
The cast was just okay, nothing special. Personally having seen Robbie Amell in The Flash it’s not the same when he’s not bursting into flames and how whoever cast him thought he could pass as a high school senior I don’t know but he looked ridiculous. Mae Whitman wasn’t brilliant either. She doesn’t look quite as old as Robbie Amell but you could tell they put a lot of effort in to attempt to make her unattractive. Romany Malco as the principal was the funniest thing about the film and he was only in it for an accumulation of about 3 minutes. There were a couple of funny scenes but nothing that made me laugh out loud. The target audience is a few years younger than me so again I’m possibly being overly critical but I can’t see anyone from any age group finding it particularly funny or looking forward to a sequel.
